Come work with us! We are looking for a Manhattan Organizer to join our team:

 

Summary of Responsibilities:
The Manhattan Organizer is responsible for maintaining NYCPP’s presence in Manhattan; developing the leadership of our members; leading local campaigns related to economic justice, public education, and immigrants’ rights; and connecting Manhattan members to broader campaigns and mobilizations.

 

Primary Responsibilities:
• Coordinate with member leaders in Manhattan to plan monthly meetings and activities and develop their leadership.
• Build and maintain relationships with local Manhattan elected officials and community allies in the neighborhood (CBO’s, churches, mosques, parent associations, local coalitions, etc.).
• Keep Manhattan members updated on developments around policy issues related to NYCPP’s work including economic justice, immigration, education or local community issues.
• Outreach and recruitment via door-knocking, phone calls, mailings, house visits and meetings.
• Mobilize for actions, meetings, rallies, press conferences, etc.
• Maintain and update database regularly.
• Attend weekly staff meetings.

 

Collaborative Responsibilities (other staff members):
• Integrate NYCPP’s local and city-wide work.
• Help conduct leadership development programs & trainings at the neighborhood and citywide levels for active union and community members.
• Create community education programs, materials and issues training materials.
• Maintain and foster relationships with local media.
• Write regular updates or newsletter articles on Manhattan work.
• Help in planning and running NYCPP citywide events.
• Support fundraising events and activities.
• Possible intern supervision.
 

Qualifications:
• Formal or informal experience organizing with community organizations and/or labor unions;
• Prior experience working with or knowledge of Manhattan (specifically Washington Heights);
• Coalition building and outreach skills among community institutions, grassroots organizations, unions, churches, service agencies, etc.;
• Team building and leadership development skills;
• Experience implementing grassroots action and policy campaigns;
• Familiarity with software applications in a Windows environment;
• Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings;
• Ability to communicate in Spanish and English is required; and
• Commitment and passion for social justice.
