Organizing Model
In each of our targeted communities (Bronx, Washington Heights, and Queens) our organizers create committees, where union members sit down with their neighbors and discuss the problems they face where they live. From there, campaigns of action can be developed to fight for change and for local empowerment. Each community base, working with unions, community groups and local leaders:
- Conducts leadership development training and cross-training to expand the pool of worker-community advocates and representatives.
- Develops an agenda of community policy goals and citywide goals to address economic justice, immigrant rights, and community service needs.
- Designs action strategies to prioritize and pursue objectives.
- Extends outreach and education work on important issues with community allies and leaders.
- Participates with partner organizations in citywide policy action campaigns around labor and immigrants rights.
- Expands membership recruitment and development.
Currently, NYCPP focuses its organizing efforts in the neighborhoods of Northwestern Queens, the South Bronx, and Washington Heights. These communities have been selected based upon:
- Strategic value of area to enhance and build upon city-wide efforts.
- Need for base-building and interest expressed in area.
- Socio-economic makeup of area.
- Density of partner union members that live or work in the area.
- Political landscape of the area.
- Number and capacity of community partners in the area.
- Potential for our work to add value to ongoing local work in the area.
